When it comes to shedding a positive light on the Catholic Church, it’s really difficult to discount all the kiddie-fiddling priests and the cover-up-prone popes and the long sordid history of violence and intolerance and stark raving idiocy that seems to surround the entire organization like a big soupy fog of bad karma and wasted potential.

But there are 69 million Catholics in America alone, and the majority of them are actually pretty charitable and caring people who aren’t into judging or proselytizing. The problem is that these run-of-the-mill Catholics aren’t very vocal either. So it’s the lunatic fringe and those mummified geezers over at the Vatican that keep getting all the press. But blaming the “Catholic Church” in general for what you hear coming out of Rome is kinda like blaming all of America for every stupid thing that George Bush ever said.

So, if you can forget pretty much all of recorded history and everything you hear on the television and in the news, then you may actually be impressed to discover that the Catholic Church (including all of the dedicated Catholic charities that comprise it) is the largest charitable organization in the world and the largest voluntary social service network in the United States. It gives more money and helps more people and has more volunteers than any other organized charity on the planet. And for good purposes too, such as resettling literally tens of thousands of refugees from genocidal Burma, for instance.

Imagine if the Roman Catholic Church could just get it’s act together and somehow update their archaic thinking for the modern world. Think of all the awesome things they could accomplish. They have the foundation, they just need the inspiration. So even though this is an incredibly tough pill to swallow, it must be said that… *gulp*…

…the Catholic Church is effing awesome.

Jerkface.
